SHAW ALUMNI CHOSEN AS FAMILY OF THE YEAR— Grady
D., Jr., Dr. Grady D. Davis, Deryl, Mrs. Dorothy Hick Davis. Psyche
Darzette, and Hahatma Ghandi Davis — a happy Family of the Year.

Congratulations to the Grady D. Davis Family which was chosen
Raleigh's Negro Family of the Year, sponsored by the Family Service
Society.

Dr. Davis is dean of the Shaw University School of Religion, and
minister of Oberlin Baptist Church. He was graduated with the A.B.
degree in Religion at Shaw University in 1942. He subsequently served
in European Theatre operations until 1946. Afterwards, he studied at
Andover-Newton Theological School, Newton Center, Massachusetts
and Boston University and was awarded the Ph.D. degree from the
latter institution.

Mrs. Davis attended Shaw for three years and majored in Home
Economics. As a housewife she finds her academic major a great ad-
vantage as she sews for the family, having tailored a summer suit
for her husband, which he wears boastfully.

The children have learned early to share in the domestic chores, in-
cluding cooking and ironing.

The Grady D. Davis family is a very remarkable family!

Raleigh Shaw Club Presents Virginia State
Band In Concert

On April 15, 1959, the Raleigh Chapter of the Shaw University Club
sponsored the presentation of the Virginia State Band in a concert as a
project to augment the Athletic Fund. The report from the committee
was received on May 20, 1959, and was not included in our last bulletin
which had already gone to press. We thought that other alumni
chapters and members would be interested in knowing about the
success of this effort, so we are including the report in this issue and
also a picture of some of the members who participated. Indications
point to increased loyalty and support among our alumni clubs, which
are found all over the country, and their enthusiasm seems to be re-
juvenated. With your continued manifestation of love for your alma
mater, Shaw University must "move forward!"
